Northville Arts Commission
Regular Meeting Minutes / August 14, 2002

Ken Naigus called the meeting to order at 7:30 at City Hall.

Attendees: Pat Dorrian-Sandbothe, Ken Naigus, Kathleen O’Brien, Kathleen Tabaczynski, Sue Taylor

Absent: Sonia Swigart, Sharon Rossow, Irme Tracy

Art Market

Pat confirmed that the sub-committee for the Artist’s Breakfast on September 15th is Pat Dorrian-Sandbothe, Kathleen O’Brien, Sonia Swigart and Kathleen Tabaczynski.

Team agreed to a $75 cancellation fee for a double-booth since there is an artist waiting list.

Clock Concerts

Ken suggested that other Commissioners help at each of the band concerts next year.

Next year, Ken may add a 3-concert blues series to the concert schedule

Michael Farrell

Pat reported the following Lecture Series schedule for 2002/2003:

  • o December 11th, Wild West Overview

  • o January 15 th, Albert Biersladt

  • o February 12 th, Charles Russell

  • o March 12th, Frederic Remington

  • o April 16 th, Native American Art

  • All lectures are on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 in the Forum at Hillside Middle School and tickets will be sold for $10, $5 for students and $45 for the whole series.

    Team agreed not to offer a senior rate for the lectures.

    Tickets will go on sale on September 6th at the Parks and Recreation Anniversary Celebration.

    Kathleen T. will do publicity for the lecture series.

    Student Art Show

    Sue announced that the First Presbyterian Church has offered to host the Student Art Show the first week of May in 2003 and in future years.

    Sue will write a communication to the schools in September as a reminder of this year’s show.

    Winter Concert Series

    Ken announced the following dates for the Winter Concert Series; January 12th, January 26th, February 9th, and February 23rd.

    The first two concerts will be the Canton Chamber Orchestra (CCO) and The Sirens, and the second two are tbd.

    The first concert, CCO, on January 12th will be at Northville High School and tickets will be $10, $7 for students.

    The remaining three concerts will be at Genitti’s Little Theatre and tickets will all be $8 (a $1 increase from last year).

    All concerts begin at 3:00pm and will last approximately 1 hr.

    Sculpture Program

    Ken reported that he is meeting with the Sculpture committee in pursuit of the second public sculpture with a goal of installation in the spring of 2003.

    Youth Performing Arts Show

    Kathleen will talk to appropriate school staff in September about the feasibility and timing of a Youth Performing Arts Show for this or future years.

    Brochure

    Team agreed that Kathleen T. would continue to update the Northville Arts Commission brochure as appropriate.

    Small runs of the brochure, in black and white copy will be printed on an as-needed basis; the next opportunities being the Parks and Recreation Anniversary celebration and Art Market.

    Holiday Art Market – Colors of Northville

    Sue and Kathleen T. discussed the tentative arrangements for the Holiday Art Market – Colors of Northville fundraiser.

    The event is to take place on November 24th in the banquet facility of Old Church Square.

    A project summary with event details and cost estimates will be prepared for the next meeting.

    Ken indicated a concern that by asking student artists to participate, the perceived professionalism of the show may be jeopardized for professional artists asked to participate. Kathleen T. will follow-up on this issue with local professional artists.

    Misc.

    Parks and Recreation Anniversary Celebration – Kathleen discussed the Anniversary celebration for Parks and Recreation. Team agreed to give away the NAC holiday ornaments at this event. Commissioners are asked to attend this event if possible.

    NAC event sign – Sue presented a concept and some approximate costs for an NAC event sign (sandwich board style) to be used for all of our events. Team agreed that Sue should pursue purchase of such a sign.

    NAC Articles of Organization – Ken presented all of the proposed revisions to the Articles of Organization (all of which were based on recommendations from the Commissioners and Traci Sincock). The Commission agreed on the proposed revisions. Ken will submit to City Clerk for review and approval by City Council.

    Display Panels – Kathleen will order the budgeted display panels by the end of the summer.

    Upcoming Dates of Interest

    August 26th - RSVP deadline for Boards and Commissions Appreciation Reception

    September 5th – Boards and Commissions Appreciation Reception, First Presbyterian Church

    September 6th – Parks and Recreation Anniversary celebration, 7:00-8:30 at Recreation Center at Hillside.

    September 11th – Next regular meeting 7:30 pm, City Hall.

    September 13th – 15th – Victorian Festival

    September 14th & 15th – Art Market

    September 15th – Artist Breakfast, 9:30 am.

    Adjournment
