Northville Arts Commission
Regular Meeting Minutes / January 8, 2003

Ken Naigus called the meeting to order at 7:30 at City Hall.

Attendees: Pat Dorrian-Sandbothe, Ken Naigus, Sharon Rossow, Sonia Swigart, Kathleen Tabaczynski, Sue Taylor

Absent: Kathleen O’Brien

Guests: Shari Peters and Chris Willerer, Community Foundation

Nan Washburn, Plymouth Symphony Orchestra

Community Foundation Grant

Shari Peters presented a grant of $500 to the Arts Commission to support the Saturday mini-blues series planned for this summer.

Shari described the purpose of the Community Foundation and their various programs throughout the year and asked for the NAC’s support of these programs.

Shari offered to include NAC events on the Community Foundation’s newsletter. Sue and Kathleen will work with CF to ensure NAC events are included.

Plymouth Symphony Orchestra (PSO)

Nan Washburn gave a brief overview of the PSO as well as herself. She discussed different ways of bringing performing arts into communities as well a specific elementary music education program that could be implemented in Northville in collaboration with the PSO and with the appropriate support and sponsorship.

Ken and the NAC will explore the music education program in detail throughout the year.

NAC Budget

Team began preliminary budget discussions and made some high-level decisions regarding 2003 Goals and Objectives. In general, team felt that 2003 focus should be on improving quality of existing programs, recruiting, funding and publicity.

Ken will update NAC Goals and Objectives document and submit to City Council for first round of 2003 budget discussions by January 15th.

Detailed budget discussions will continue in February.

January 15th – Michael Farrell Art Lecture on Albert Bierstadt, 7:30pm, Hillside

January 23rd (tentative) – Open House for individuals interested in getting involved with NAC, Tuscan Cafe, 7:00pm

January 26th – Winter Concert, The Sirens, 3:00pm, Genitti’s Little Theatre

January 27th – NAC 2003 Goals and Objectives draft review with City Council, City Hall, 7:30pm
