(back to Archive Overview)

CITY OF NORTHVILLE
BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION
Tuesday – May 14, 2002

The meeting was called to order by Co-Chair Lestock at 7:00 PM in city hall conference Room B.

Members present: Lestock, Lenk, DeMattos, Price, Rewald

Members absent: Cusmano, Eden, Hansknecht, Stapleton, Tague

Commission member Doris Eden is recovering from her recent illness. NORTHVILLE GARDEN CLUB donated $150 to the commission. Lestock will send a thank you.

City Clerk, Dianne Massa sent a letter to Cusmano asking her if she wanted to continue on the commission. She responded that she did. Lestock talked with Massa in regard to updating the Resolution. She said she would be interested and Lestock will get with her in late June early July to work on amending this document. Members are invited to participate.

Lestock asked the attending members if all email addresses where current. They are.

The 2002 NBC CALENDAR was updated with planting dates/times and along with a current member’s list will be going out with this month’s minutes.

The annual SEEDLING GIVEAWAY, shared with the Township, was another success. Approximately 175 residents stopped by to pick up free seedlings.

PLANTINGS: Lestock talked with a representative from Cindy’s Floral Distributing about annual plants and pricing. They are located at Eastern Market. It was decided that since we purchase our annuals as we need them and not in large quantities this would not be cost effective. We will continue to get our plants from the Farmers Market and Brainers and other local nurseries that have the ‘special’ plants that we will need.

Ms. Kosar, hired gardener for the downtown area, will plant a red, white and blue theme. So we are going to try red, white, blue and some green in the containers.

Lestock invited members of the Northville Garden Club to plant the containers on May 23 - 9:00 AM at the DPW Yard.

The N. Randolph Street island was planted on Saturday, May 11 by the ‘Make a Difference Group’ from the high school. Grant money ($1,200) was used to purchase 12 flats of annuals. Eight students participated. Red and white begonias and blue ageratum. They did a fine job.

The daylilies and hostas were removed from the north end of the S. Main Street island. Marty Walters (248) 349-349-1083 and her group of friends will be planting and maintaining in the south end of this bed area. Lestock will talk to her to see what is needed.

Daylilies and sedum were removed from the band shell bed to make room for the Treble Clef sculpture to be dedicated at the first clock concert on Friday, May 31.

At this time, no plantings shall be done around the Rural Hill sign .

BCSEM LUNCHEON: Thursday - June 20, 2002

Our next workshop/meeting will be to construct favors for this luncheon. Lenk will pick up a map to St. John’s. City hall has no display available but did have info that Lestock will review and possibly come up with a ‘Northville Facts’page. DeMattos will go to the Chamber to see what information they might have. Lestock will check with Traci Sincock to see if the Rotary has anything pertinent we could use. Lestock talked with Linda at St. John’s but too soon to finalize anything. Invites will go out this week. Lenk will take reservations and get checks to city hall as they come in (#250-000-666). Lestock will call members to help with mailing after she receives the packet from Cassie Miller. Lestock talked with Nicki Bateson and a gift card for $50 for the Olive Garden will be given to speaker Nancy Lindley, Great Lakes Roses. Rose centerpieces will be purchased from Great Lakes at a wholesale cost of $7.00 ea. Lestock purchased paper with roses on it for the invites. Small boxes of Michigan cherries will also be given as favors. A 50/50 raffle will be available.

We shall need name badges and a program.

The next workshop/meeting will be on Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at city hall in conference Room B at 7:00 PM. Meeting adjourned at 8:05 PM.
