Beautification Commission MinutesCITY OF NORTHVILLE Members present: Lestock, Lenk, Hansknecht, Rewald, Stapleton, Tague Members absent: Cusmano, DeMattos, Price Guest: Sally Hayes The meeting was called to order at 7:10 at the Northville District Library. A moment of silence was noted for Doris Eden, our member who passed on February 12. Discussion followed as to what we could do in her memory. Suggestions were to plant a tree, install a plaque, plant flowers, plant a shrub. Lestock mentioned that on Arbor Day there was to be a tree planting at 8 Mile and Novi Street and perhaps we could focus on this area for a memorial. The DPW has planted 15 trees, red maples and bradford pears near the sign at 8 Mile and Novi Street. Lestock asked if there was anyone interested in taking over as Chair of the commission. No one was interested in the position. This will be Lestock’s seventh year. Due to personal circumstances member, Carol Price has decided to leave the commission. Flyers were distributed for the annual seedling giveaway with the Township which will be on Saturday, May 3 at the Township Civic Center. All members were advised to arrive at 9:00 AM to help set up. The sign is in the works for the southwest corner of 8 Mile and Center Streets. The money will not be coming out of our budget. Lenk and Lestock planted bulbs ($168.66) last November in the Clock and Witch Wall. Everything is coming up except the daffs in the Clock and the Witch Wall. In 2001 bulbs were planted in the Clock but a layer of mulch was blanketed over the bed. Perhaps we should have covered them again last year????? Lestock trimmed back and fertilized the roses on S. Main. Lestock asked for volunteers and ideas for the south end of the Witch Wall. Volunteers - to remove the ever-expanding black-eyed susans; ideas - as what to plant in this area. Hansknecht volunteered to help. Lestock suggested some grasses. She asked the commission to be thinking and it will be discussed next month. Lestock will contact Marty Walters to see if she and her gardening group are interested in again adopting the beds they maintained last year on S. Main. The tulips are again coming up in the far S. Main bed. Lestock will contact Jan Purtell to coordinate dates for Hillside Middle School students planting dates. Lestock will order the fertilizer for this year’s plantings. Lestock will put together a ‘2003 Commission Calendar’ (meeting dates, planting dates, etc.). Planter and downtown plantings were briefly discussed and will be further talked on next month. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 13 at city hall meeting room A at 7:00 PM. Meeting adjourned at 8:15 PM. |
