Beautification Commission MinutesCITY OF NORTHVILLE Members present: Cusmano, Hansknecht, Hayes, Lenk, Lestock, Tague Members absent: DeMattos, Rewald, Stapleton The meeting was called to order at 7:10 PM. The commissioners had received the minutes by e.mail and U.S. mail and were approved as read. Also sent and received were the Commission Membership List and 2003 Calendar. MEMBERSHIP: Cusmano, Hansknecht, Lestock, Rewald and Stapleton commissions expired on July 1, 2003. Due to time constraints Stapleton has decided not to renew her commission, the others will go on. But was asked by Lestock if you could please do the judging this year. Stapleton agreed and said if needed she would also deadhead the planters. EXPENSE: The 2003 Spring Planting Expense was reviewed and discussed. The spring planting expense totaled $2,742.11. Lestock tracked the costs of the commission spring plantings expense for the past four years to see what the cost variation had been over that period. DEADHEADING: The deadheading schedule was also distributed for the remainder of the summer. It is the plan to follow this schedule up until the Victoria Festival. Lenk and Lestock will be maintaining the clock and the witch wall. The commission only will be doing the (50) planters. WATER: The watering for the planters, clock and witch wall is going very well. Andrew is back for the third year and has been doing an excellent job. PLANTINGS: Gallogly asked Lestock to come up with a plan for the Northville sign at the corner of 8 Mile and Center Streets. He requested that this be done before July 4th. He said that the DPW would plant it if she purchased. Lestock and Hansknecht went to the site to see what plants would be appropriate. Plants selected were: (3) Morning Light grasses, (8) Carpet Roses – Red, (20) Sedum – Autumn Joy and (30) Daylilies – Happy Returns. Lestock purchased them and along with Lenk and the DPW the plants were planted and wood chipped on schedule. The planters, witch wall and clock all are doing very well and look good so far this summer. Due to the location, the (2) bandshell boxes are not doing well. The S. Main Street bed was planted with (3) Weigla shrubs – Wine & Roses by PEO Chapter FL. This group will be maintaining only one bed this year. AWARDS: Lestock distributed the information in regards to Awards. Business Awards: Were discussed. It was decided that we would continue to follow the same procedure that we have been for the past few years. For their information, Lestock will send a copy of the past seven years Business Award Winners. Residential Awards: Cusmano suggested a change in the residential awards. Instead of a certificate this year, each commissioner would take a photograph of the 15 homes in her area. These photos would then be placed in a blank card and along with a letter sent to the awardees. The members voiced that timing, (ie. light, time of day, weather, etc.) were factors when taking these pictures and it was harder than it seemed. Cusmano will work on this and bring it to the August meeting. Please remember when viewing the 15 residences, be sure to stay in your section, do not overlap your area into another commissioner’s area and also, it is most important, check to see if it is a Court or a Street. The awards luncheon will be on Tuesday, September 30. BCSEM: Lenk informed us of Southfield facts from the luncheon that she, Tague and Marie Barr attended in June. Meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, August 12 at city hall. Please call if you cannot be there. Linda Lestock NBC – Co-chair Cc: Gary Word Dianne Massa Jim Gallogly Paul Vertrees Lori Ward |
