Beautification Commission Minutes

(back to Archive Overview)

NORTHVILLE BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION
Tuesday, August 10, 2004

Members present: Hansknecht, Hayes, Lestock, Tague

Members absent: Cusmano, Rewald

The meeting was called to order at 7:15 PM Chair Lestock.

WATERING:

Lestock, while driving through the city, noticed the potato vine in the planters was limp and talked to Steve Heidt, DPW Director in regard that the planters drying out. He said that he would see the planters were not neglected.

The ferns and the two planter boxes on the band shell are now being watered on a regular basis and are coming back.

Heat bounces off the Witch Wall thus making it a hot area, drying out the soil. The cannas, verbena bonariensis and the red salvia in this area are very dry. Although Lestock added Soil Moist to this area last month because it is not watered on a regular basis the Soil Moist does not appear to be helping. Lestock mentioned to Heidt the Witch Wall needed to be watered regularly and she also added mulch from the DPW yard to these areas.

PLANTINGS:

The daylilies and iris in the Witch Wall needed to be divided. Lestock gave a clump of the variegated iris to Parks & Recs for the renovated bed in front of the new Senior Center.

TREBLE CLEF:

Sharon Russo and Sue Taylor spoke to Lestock in regard to the sculpture. Renegade children were climbing on the bed and the sculpture during one of the Friday night concerts. Parents were approached and wanted to know where the ‘Do Not Climb’ ‘Keep Off’ sign, etc was.

The ladies talked with Nancy Lindley, rose vendor at the Farmers Market and she advised a rose (Floribunda Rose – Redwood) to plant in the area. Gallogly thought this was a good idea for next year.

AWARDS:

Photo Awards will again be awarded to the business this year. As this manner of award is limiting as we only do 10-11. Next year we will discuss whether we should go back to the plaque and year tag system.

Cusmano called Lestock and discussed the business awards. She mentioned that perhaps a ‘Flower Pot’ award should be instituted as so many businesses place pots and boxes in front of the stores.

SCHEDULES:

Lestock passed out the Deadheading Schedule and the Residence Selection Maps. We have fewer Commission members this year so the 10 areas in the city are now 7 areas. 22 homes are to be selected from each area. No member’s homes, homes without number/addresses or homes For Sale are eligible. Please get your selections to Lestock by Friday, September 3.

MISC:

Lestock brought to the attention the article in The Journal in regards to the Township Beautification Commission having a hard time coming up with selections this year.

Meeting adjourned at 7:50 PM. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 10. Would appreciate notification if you cannot attend.
