Downtown Development Authority MinutesDOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY Present: DDA Members: Christopher J. Johnson, Margene Buckhave, Greg Presley, Rick Shaffner, Jim Long, Lynda Heaton, Jim DeHaan, Lou LaChance, Dave Larsen. Others: School Board Member Martha Nield, City Manager Gary Word, DDA Director Lori Ward, DPW Director Jim Gallogly, Parks & Rec Director Traci Sincock, Reporter Lon Huhman. STRATEGIC PLANNING WORKSHOP Director Lori Ward began the strategic planning workshop with a review of the role and powers of the DDA, the present boundaries of the DDA, and the expiration date of the charter of the DDA. Discussion took place regarding the possibility of expanding the boundaries of the DDA, what properties might be included, and the ramifications of expanding the boundaries. This issue will be discussed in depth at a future DDA meeting. A quick review was given of the issues discussed at the recent Joint Strategic Planning Session held with the Planning Commission, DDA, City Council, and Historic District Commission. This was followed by the workshop activities designed and facilitated by the Director. The group was asked to list the assets and liabilities of the downtown as they perceive them. Subsequently, the group was asked to list possible projects that would enhance the business mix and appearance of downtown. After the lists were completed, the group was asked to prioritize the list of projects. The major items that received the most votes included: the support of public restrooms, the expansion of the downtown area, recruitment and retention of downtown businesses to full occupancy, the improvement of parking, and the investigation of extending Cady Street. The DDA members also expressed a high interest in placing the Farmers’ Market in the downtown area. Parks and Recreation Director Traci Sincock presented an update on the Ford Field project and the results of the bid documents. She indicated the project would greatly benefit from assistance from the DDA. Members stated a review of the budget would be necessary before any commitments could be made. The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for April 10th at 8:00 a.m. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:10 p.m. Respectfully submitted,
Carol T. Kasprowicz Recording Secretary |
