Historic Commission MinutesNORTHVILLE HISTORIC DISTRICT COMMISSION 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chairman Swigart called the Historic District Commission meeting to order at 7:00 P.M. 2. ROLL CALL: Present: Culp, Holleman, Kennedy, Swigart. Absent: Cryderman (excused), Coponen (excused) 3. MINUTES: Motion by Culp, supported by Holleman to approve the minutes of the May 16, 2001 as submitted. Motion unanimously carried. Voice Vote. 4. AUDIENCE COMMENTS: None. 5. REPORTS: A. City Administration: None. City Council: None. Planning Commission: None. Other Community / Governmental Liaisons: None. 6. CASES: CASE #1 Charles Simpkins Paint 200 North Center Street Northville, Michigan 48167 A representative from Simkins and Simkins described the plans to change the color of the exterior paint from Coral and Forest Green to Benjamin Moore’s, Classic Burgundy (HC –26) and Lenox Tan (HC-44). Motion by Culp, supported by Holleman to approve the color selection as submitted. (Since the representative did not know the distribution of the colors, the final disposition would be approved by one of the Commissioners.) Motion unanimously carried. Voice Vote. Several weeks after the meeting color photos were submitted to the building department. All existing cream and peach will be painted tan. The existing green will be painted burgundy. Signage will be burgundy with tan lettering. CASE #2 Fifth Third Bank Signage 125 CadyCentre Northville, Michigan 48167 Tracy Everts, a representative from Valley City Sign Company, submitted a color portfolio of the changes to the Old Kent Bank, recently bought out by the Fifth Third Bank. All existing logo will be changed to the Fifth Third Bank logo. Colors are Flag Red, Blue – Black, Gold Leaf, and White. "Jeanie" is the ATM machine and is Flag Red with a gold leaf boarder with white lettering. Motion by Holleman, supported by Kennedy to accept the application as submitted. Motion unanimously carried. Voice Vote. CASE #3 Great Harvest Bread Paint & Awning 139 E. Main Street Northville, Michigan 48167 Ray Novelly, owner of Great Harvest Bread Co., described plans to paint the exterior front and rear of the building at 139 E. Main St. The existing beige will be painted cream and the green trim will be changed to purple. New signage over the front and rear space will replace the existing old signage. The overhang in the rear of the building will match the front of the building. The black lettering will be changed to purple. The lettering meets the requirements of the Sign Ordinance. Signature Awning will install the two new awnings. The fabric is Sunbrello, and the color is Periwinkle #4937 and the style is a Brass Block Stripe. Motion by Culp, supported by Holleman to accept the application as submitted. Motion unanimously carried. Voice Vote CASE #4 Michael C. Howe Storage Shed 102 S. Rogers Northville, Michigan 48167 Mr. Howe stated that he has already built a storage shed on his property. It is constructed out of three quarter inch plywood. Although not yet painted, it will be painted white to match the house and existing garage. He stated that he would bring in a sample of the roof shingles which will be white and match that of the existing house and garage. Motion by Culp, supported by Holleman, to accept the application as submitted. Motion unanimously carried. Voice Vote. CASE #5 Michael C. Howe Replace Porch 102 S. Rogers St. Northville, Michigan 48167 Mr. Howe described plans to replace the porch, which is literally falling off the rear of the house, with a wolmanized wood deck. A diagram of the deck was enclosed in the Commissioner’s packets. COMMISSIONER CONCERNS AND COMMENTS: The plans for the new porch "deck" are very contemporary and it does not have a Historic or Victorian design. Commissioner Holleman sketched a railing for the deck an end posts which included caps giving the deck "a not so contemporary look." Chief Building Official, Richard Starling stated he needs drawings and specifics for the deck before the construction can begin. Motion by Holleman, supported by Culp to approve the application as submitted with the amendment that the applicant adhere to the modifications as discussed this evening, and to follow the guidance of the Building Official, Richard Starling. Motion unanimously carried. Voice Vote CASE #6 Northville Parks and Recreation Sign 150 Hutton Northville, Michigan 48167 Marc Russell, Landscape Architect, described plans for Signage at Ford Field. The sign, a 3’ diameter limestone disc will be enclosed in a reclaimed brick wall. The letters will be sandblasted into the limestone and painted with a black lithochorme finish. Lettering "Ford Field" will be 5 ½ " high. He is working with Graphic Visions on the specific font. The sign will be placed on the north side of the field at the main entrance to the park. Other details of Ford Field were also discussed. These include the wood bridge and the ornamental gate. They will be submitted for Historic District approval at a later date. Motion by Culp, supported by Holleman, to accept the application as submitted. Motion unanimously carried. Voice Vote. 7.
