A public meeting designed to gather input and discuss ways to enhance park programs and amenities was held Aug. 3 at the Northville Community Center. Northville residents shared their input with Parks & Recreation staff and consultant LAP Creative and also asked questions on a one-on-one basis. This session will help the Parks & Recreation team formulate the department’s five-year Master Plan for the shared service between the city and township. A second public meeting will be held in the future.
In addition, an
online survey seeks public input from residents and others who use Northville parks and recreation services regarding enhancements to these public amenities. The Master Plan process is to collaboratively develop goals and a shared vision for the future that will connect people through nature, placemaking, athletics, activities and lifestyle enhancements. Overarching goals are to create better health among residents and reinforce Northville’s reputation as a desirable place to live.
Northville City Manager George Lahanas said, “The Master Plan is an important building block for greater connectivity among residents and the region. We want people to enjoy our parks, engage in sports programs, and have new ways to interact with nearby and regional neighbors.”
New Parks & Recreation Director Derek Smith said, “This is a great opportunity for me to learn about what’s important to residents directly from them and from our nearby neighbors. It’s also an important tool to ensure our community’s happiness with our parks and recreation system long term.”
Not only does the Master Plan provide a roadmap for growth, but it also opens up opportunities for grants through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) to support its vision. The Master Plan must be approved by MDNR and updated every five years.
“Northville Parks & Recreation will use it to inventory existing facilities and resources, and identify community recreation and open space needs to create a plan of action,” Smith said.
Northville Township Supervisor Mark Abbo said, “This survey and the Master Plan are an important check-in with our residents to make sure we are growing, improving and enhancing the quality of life for those who are fortunate to call this region home.”
Lindsay Ku, of Northville Township, brought photos of park amenities that her family of four – with children ages five and six – has enjoyed in Minneapolis and Phoenix. One offers a skating loop and tubing area for cold weather and the other has a putting green for warm weather.
